At the beginning of August 2011, CMC Ekocon d.o.o. — as the lead partner, together with the company Komunalne gradnje Grosuplje d.o.o. — began with the renovation of the hydrant network outside and inside the Karavanke tunnel. CMC was selected to be a contractor based on a public tender by the investor Dars d.d. Our company performed all mechanical and other installations required for the upgrade of the hydrant-network power supply system in the Karavanke tunnel, built in 1991.
Works outside the tunnel included the reconstruction of the water storage tank of Presušnik, installation of a new leachate capture, a new leachate pumping station, and a new connection shaft. We installed the entire pumping station equipment, the new hydrant pressure-pipeline equipment, as well as connection shaft equipment: pumps, flow meter, safety-control armatures, external hydrants, float valves, and all necessary fittings, armatures and pipelines made of ductile iron. The entire system has recently been connected to the monitoring system of the motorway operator (motorway base Hrušica) via the communication protocol for operation management and control.
The works inside the tunnel included the renovation and upgrade of the equipment of hydrant niches in the tunnel. All armatures (shut-off valves, fittings, tunnel hydrants) in the hydrant niches were replaced. All locations were also upgraded with a pressure control system. Fire safety was improved by additional installation of tunnel foam hydrants in all SOS-niches. In addition, a part of the heating system of the supply pipeline at the portal entrance has also been renovated.
Owing to long-term partners/equipment suppliers who have been cooperating with us for over 20 years, our company was able to supply and install most of the materials and equipment for the renovation. Due to specific requirements, a part of the equipment was supplied and installed by suppliers who we hope to cooperate with on similar projects in the field of water-supply systems in the future.
